I’ve always been someone who has kept a pretty loaded schedule. Starting from high school, my junior and senior years of high school I took a full load of 8 AP classes and ended up being a triple major in college before switching at the last minute to drop my business degree and go with a master’s degree in electrical engineering. Even now, I work double-time putting in a full 40-50 hours at my day job writing code and managing my team while working on this blog after hours at home. My sleep has usually been the component that ends up getting short-changed as I end up averaging about 4-6 hours of shut-eye on most nights.
For the past few weeks though, I’ve felt more mentally and physically exhausted as a result of new work demands (I scored a promotion that is much higher visibility but also has much higher pressures). I knew I needed to get more sleep to let my mind and body recover. I made a few changes and could not believe the difference in how amazing I felt the next morning after a solid night’s sleep. And so of course, I’m sharing them with you as I’m a new-found believer in the restorative wonders good sleep can provide!
Step 1: Upgrade Your Mattress to a Nectar Mattress
Having a quality mattress makes a world of difference! We had made the switch to a memory foam mattress a few years ago but oftentimes Adrian would complain about waking up hot and unable to get comfortable. When I learned about the Nectar Sleep mattress, I was instantly sold on the fact that it had not only 3 different layers of memory foam (including 2 that are gel infused to help dissipate heat), but also a Tencel cooling cover to help circulate air and wick heat away. Nectar Sleep mattresses also all CertiPUR-US Certified and made without using any ozone depleters, PDBEs, TDBPP, mercury, or lead. Given that we spend nearly a third of our life in bed, it was so important to me that we were sleeping on something healthy.
With a 365 night home trial, free shipping and returns, plus a forever warranty, it made the decision to try out this Nectar mattress a no-brainer!
Delivering and setting up the Nectar mattress seriously could not have been easier. I’m so glad that I didn’t have to take time out of my busy schedule to wait at home for delivery and instead the mattress showed up in a compact box at my doorstep! Everything was vacuum sealed and made maneuvering it so much easier — plus it was so cool to watch the mattress inflate once I opened it up! There weren’t any weird smells and I was able to sleep on it the very same night that it was installed! The Nectar mattress works on all frames so it was one less thing I had to worry about too when ordering for our platform bed.
After having slept on the Nectar mattress for the last few weeks, I’m getting some of the best sleep that I’ve had in years! Sometimes you don’t even realize how much you’re tossing and turning in bed and it all adds up to loss of sleep. The medium-firm memory foam provided just the right resistance and I could actually feel the memory foam as it conformed to support my body.
Step 2: Get Your Scent Game On
It’s amazing how much scent plays a part in how your mind works. I’m not big on essential oils but I do love having certain scents that let my body know it’s time to wind down for the day. Lavender has been a long-time favorite but recently I’ve also added some frankincense and even cedarwood to the mix and it’s an incredibly soothing way to breathe in some relaxation and let my mind finally slow down from it’s frenetic daytime pace.
Candles are another option that I love and there’s something so soothing about having the flicker of a slow-burning fire. This malachite one from Kendra Scott has frankincense blended with warm amber and green ivy — it is absolutely beautiful and I love the incredible depth of scents that just make you want to close your eyes and take it all in.

Similarly, I also recently added the Dermalogica Sound Sleep Cocoon Nighttime Gel Cream and love that it’s also infused with essential oils that are motion activated! The combination of lavender with sandalwood and patchouli is light yet I’ve noticed that it also helps me get a deeper sleep (and of course revitalizes my skin too!).
Step 3: Black It Out
I first discovered the amazingness of blackout curtains when I was a sleep-deprived new mom trying desperately to get back my sleep any way that I could. We have always lived in the city so being able to block out external street lamps and city lights has made such a difference in helping me get deeper sleep. Blackout roller shades are on our home-project todo list, but you can see below that even in the interim we have an ad-hoc pull down black fabric that’s working as our blackout curtain!
Another option to black it out is to try a sleep mask. I’ve actually been using the Slip Silk Eye Mask lately as I’ve been rubbing my eyes in my sleep and wreaking havoc on my lash extensions, but I’ve found that it’s also amazing for really creating that blackout experience that helps me get the most out of my shut eye. These masks from Slip are my favorite as the silk fabric is super soft on your skin while the elastic actually stays on my head all night and is comfortable enough to wear while sleeping.
