Happy Monday!! It’s been wayyy too long since I updated this space and I have so much to catch you all up on! But, first things first, Dylan turned 8 years old on July 3rd, and the past few days have been quite the week of celebrating for my big guy. Times are still different around here as Texas coronavirus cases are surging. So we played it safe and commemorated Dylan’s special day with some creative socially-distanced fun! Read on for 5 birthday party ideas for kids that are all about going big when it comes to celebrating birthdays quarantine-style!
Quarantine Birthday Party Ideas for Kids
1. See friends in real life with a drive-by parade
sign by AlphaLit, balloon garland from Lushra
my outfit: stripe peplum top, denim shorts in medium destroy (similar), bow knot slides
I held out for the longest time when it came to planning Dylan’s birthday as my fingers were crossed hoping that we could throw an actual get-together with his best buds, just like old times. Unfortunately, Texas has been hit pretty hard lately with a surge in positive coronavirus cases, so it just seemed like a better idea to not risk it. Dylan is quite the extrovert though so seeing his friends in real life definitely means the world to him, so I did the next best thing and arranged to have a drive-by parade!
It was so awesome to see cars lined up along the street with balloons, streamers, and homemade signs! Dylan was able to be silly with his friends and even as parents, it was so good to get some face time in and catch up over how summer was treating all of us.
I surprised Dylan the morning of his drive-by party with a huge display in our front yard and omg, it was just so awesome to see his reaction! Alpha Lit did the marquee letters and Lushra did a professional set up of the balloons. Cannot recommend them enough and Dylan absolutely loved all the people wishing him a happy birthday as they passed by the house!
2. Go big with decorations

I had Lushra do a professional balloon setup with their balloon garland next to the Alpha Lit marquee and after seeing all the setup that was involved in getting the balloons raised and situated, I am 100% grateful that I left that completely up to the pros. But, I did want a smaller balloon garland to use as a party decoration as I was thinking about having something inside the house for the family to enjoy.
In my phone consultation with Lushra as we planned our party, they assured me that their DIY kits were perfect for smaller garland decorations and incredibly easy to do. I figured it would be worth a shot! The chose the same “Its My Birthday” balloon garland kit and the package had everything needed to get that same “professional” balloon garland look including an assortment of 11″-24″ balloons to make a 10′ garland and fishing line.

Balloon Buddy Electric Air Inflator (similar on Amazon)
also recommend: additional fishing line, wall hooks
I got busy the morning of the party and thank goodness for the electric air pump for making the balloon blow-up quick and easy! The Lushra videos also were a huge help with all the tips and tricks to make it look legit, and seriously, setting up the entire garland took under an hour! Looking back I recommend doing balloon setup the night before as the balloons definitely do last and it’s just one less thing to worry about on the day of the party. I loved how the balloons turned out so much that I decided to hang up the garland outside our front door. It actually made for the perfect backdrop as friends drop up through our circular drive wishing Dylan a happy birthday!
If you’re wanting to try out the Lushra DIY balloon garland kit, use my code KILEEN10 for 10% off — highly recommend getting one of their kits over the ones that you might find on Amazon as the balloons are so much higher quality! Trust me, having balloons pop after they’re all strung together in your beautiful garland is the worst feeling ever and going back to fix it with more balloons will be a never-ending (I’m speaking from experience, lol! 😆).
3. Keep up with traditions
For Dylan’s first birthday, I picked him up an ice cream cake from Baskin Robbins and it’s become our yearly tradition! It made him so happy that this was one thing we could still keep going despite quarantine and it was a great reminder that little traditions like these really count when so much is out of our control right now.

4. Create something / get messy together
We also did a little tie-dye DIY with t-shirts! Dylan’s turned out absolutely crazy and amazing while mine definitely had a little room for improvement, lol. It was a lot messier than I was expecting (and I’m still sticking to the store-bought tie-dye shirts for myself!), but it was still so much fun for the kids and they’ve been requesting to do it again! I picked up this tie-dye kit and would 100% recommend!
We also had quite a bit of fun in our front yard the day of the party with some soap spray foam that one of our friends brought over and omg, best gift ever! We all had such a blast spraying each other and best part is that the foam is 100% soap so it doesn’t stain. The foam even has a pleasant taste in case any gets into your mouth and the kids have already been asking for more!
5. Have a livestream show / performer
And finally, in the afternoon we set up a livestream of a magician as Dylan has been obsessed with magic tricks at the moment, and it was just such a good way for the kids to have some light-hearted fun while still staying safe at home.
Celebrations and parties are definitely looking a little different right now, but it’s still so important to commemorate those important moments in your life. I love that we were still able to make Dylan’s birthday a special day and I hope you found a few of these ideas helpful when planning your next social-distancing birthday party!
