Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer and as much as I love the ease of summer dressing, I’m also starting to get excited about Fall fashion! I spent some time last weekend pulling out pieces for the cooler weather and I’m looking forward to wearing all the scarves, jackets, and boots already! While I love the fun of styling cooler-weather pieces, part of me has always dreaded the laundry aspect. Sweaters are always a pain to wash as I’m always afraid of messing up the knitting and you never know about washing wool as it can lose its shape so easily. I recently picked up the Scotchgard™ Fabric & Upholstery Protector as I was looking for something to protect our fabric couch, but when I went to read the label and saw that it was recommended to use on clothes too, my curiosity was piqued!
Scotchgard™ Fabric & Upholstery Protector can be used on almost all washable fabrics including cotton, polyester, silk, wool, acrylic, and nylon. The product acts as a barrier to stains by pushing them away from the fabric so that stains release easily. It’s even safe to use on delicate and dry-clean fabrics! I tried out the Scotch Fabric & Upholstery Protector first on my blanket scarves first as I figured I could spot test a small unnoticeable corner. My scarves also seem to always be a magnet for stains given their size and the fact that I use them as multipurpose blankets and nursing covers for my little ones too! I was surprised at just how easy the Scotchgard Fabric Protector was to use and I’m happy to break it down into 6 easy steps:
- Prepare. Cover and protect surrounding non-fabric materials from overspray. If overspray occurs, quickly wipe it up. I personally went outside to an open area in my backyard to use the product as I didn’t want to take any chances.
- Shake. Shake can well.
- Test. Test for colorfastness. Spray hidden area until wet and wipe vigorously with a white absorbent cloth. If color rubs off, do not use.
- Spray. Hold can upright 6″ from fabric surface. Overlap spray using a slow, sweeping motion. Two light coats are better than one heavy coating.
- Dry. Allow to dry between coats.
- Reapply. Reapply after every cleaning or annually to maintain protection (just depends on how much you wear).
The bottle is super easy to use and the product comes out in a light fine mist. I was also happy to see that there wasn’t any sort of residue and it didn’t change the texture of my clothes in any way. I noticed that even when I did drip some liquids on my treated clothes, it would bead up instead of absorb and it was so easy to just wipe clean! I don’t know about you but there are certain Chinese foods that I love that can be a little messy (xiaolongbao dumplings are one of my favorite foods but it seems like the inside “soup” always ends up on my clothes!). I’m so glad I don’t have to be that adult eating with a bib on anymore, lol!
I’ve since gone on to apply the Scotchgard Fabric Protector on all my sweaters and other tops that cost an arm and a leg to dry clean. I love the look of crisp white and now I can finally wear all the white even around my kids without being afraid of getting stains!
I picked up my Scotchgard Fabric & Upholstery Protectant at Target in the cleaning supplies aisle — there’s even a coupon available now for you to save a couple bucks! For more great ideas to use Scotchgard Fabric & Upholstery Protector, be sure to check out this social hub.
