Now that Fall is in full swing, the weather is cooling down, and the leaves are actually starting to turn colors, it’s prime time for family photos! We made it out to the Dallas Arboretum for our yearly visit to Pumpkin Village (check out our photos from each of the previous 6 years — crazy!) and managed to snap a few shots before the kids ran off to play.
Picking out coordinated family outfits for photos can definitely be tricky and I’ve shared tips previously when it comes to planning coordinated outfits when it was springtime, so I figured I could expand to add 3 additional tips when navigating family photoshoot season now that it’s Fall!
on me: floral dress – on sale! | similar denim jacket | taupe ankle booties
on Mei: floral dress – on sale! | taupe ankle booties | watch
on Dylan: dinosaur shirt – on sale! | pull-on jeans | lace-up shoes – on sale! | watch
on Adrian: gingham shirt – on sale! | jeans
TIP 1: Start with the “hero” outfit
I usually start planning outfits 2-3 weeks before the photo shoot date and search for one particular outfit that I want to be the focal point, or “hero” outfit. I actually originally had planned out this 2-piece skirt set but then found it difficult to find a coordinating outfit for Mei, so ended up going with a Mommy + Me look. I actually really love that our dresses are exactly matching but instead just have the same color fabric and similar floral print combination. Similarly for the boys, I went with the same color base fabric but changed it up with the prints to give it some variety.
Below are a few of my favorite places to shop for Family Matching outfits that are already hand-selected:

on Mei: floral dress – on sale! | taupe ankle booties
TIP 2: Be mindful of season and location
Since I knew we’d be going to the pumpkin patch, I chose rich Fall colors such as burgundy and orange to give it a fall vibe. Other seasonal colors that I love for this time of year include olive, mustards, and browns.

TIP 3: Stick with classics
Because you’ll likely want to look at these photos for years to come, it’s also a good idea to stay away from looks that are too trendy. Fit-and-flare dresses are always a good choice when it comes to the girls’ outfits and I stick with button-down shirts/polos for the boys.

I love that you start with a hero outfit. What a great tip! Great family photos too.
I love the look of coordinating base colors and different patterns, it breaks it up a bit (without being too matchy matchy) while still looking whole.
