Hask Hair Keratin | Hask Kair Argan
Let’s start with a little background story of my hair before giving you the run down of the keratin protein vs argan oil hair treatment. In my early to mid 20s, I couldn’t get my hair to grow more than a couple inches past my shoulders. And even at that length, my hair was brittle and would literally break when I would style it in the mornings. I cleansed my hair every other day, took biotin supplements, used heat protectant, and still my hair was a weak, dull mess. I had no idea what I was doing wrong.

Then fast forward to my early 30s when I learned about the chemicals found in hair products that cause all sorts of damage. I’ve since swapped out my hair products so that they are all sulfate free and silicone free. Sulfates have been shown to dry out the hair cuticle as well as irritate the scalp. Silicones, on the other hand, make hair shiny but coat the hair shaft such that all moisture is sealed out, resulting in my flat, lifeless hair that you see above. Since switching to sulfate-free and silicone-free hair products about 2 years ago, my hair hasn’t been the same since! Even through post-pregnancy hormone fluctuations, I’ve been able to sustain decently long, healthy hair.

When I heard about Hask hair and the fact that all their products are free of sulfates, parabens, phthalates, gluten, drying alcohol, and artificial colors, I was curious. I tried out 2 of their lines: Keratin Protein and Argan Oil hair treatments.
Keratin Protein

Air-dried hair after using the Hask Keratin Protein shampoo and conditioner |
My hair absolutely LOVED the Keratin Protein line! I had a Keratin treatment done on my hair in October of last year and it really tamed any sort of frizz issues I had with my hair. Since then I’ve continued to use a shampoo/conditioner with Keratin in it and it’s really helped prolong the effects of my treatment. Keratin Protein is what makes hair strong to begin with, so using a Keratin-infused product naturally revives, restores, calms, and strengthens hair from the inside out. My hair here is after using the Hask Keratin Protein shampoo and conditioner and air-dried with no additional styling products afterwards. I loved that my hair was smooth, frizz-free, and shiny!
Argan Oil Hair Treatment

With the Argan oil line, my hair was still frizz-free but the product was a bit too heavy. After using the shampoo and conditioner and letting it air-dry, my hair was left looking a little greasy and lacked movement. I actually washed my hair first with the Argan oil, waited a couple days, and then washed my hair with the Keratin protein line (I just wanted to review the Keratin protein line first as I loved that one so much!). Argan oil hair treatment is often dubbed the “Miracle Oil” as it is loaded with vitamins and antioxidants to repair hair. I do have fine hair so I think the Argan oil was just a little too much for it. I can see this product working wonders though for those with thick or coarse hair. I’m hoping to try out the Argan oil line again this summer as I think it will be a great post-swim treatment when my hair is particularly unruly!
An added bonus of the Hask products is that both lines have a great fruity scent: the Keratin protein smelled of sweet berries while the Argan Oil smelled citrus-y. Besides shiny, frizz-free hair, there’s nothing better than having hair that just smells delicious!
Hask hair products can be found at everyday stores like Walgreens, CVS, and Walmart (complete listing of locations to buy here). I know I will personally be re-purchasing the Keratin protein line when I run out!

I use argan oil but not a whole line of products just the oil before I flat iron my hair (if and when i do that). Seems the keratin treatment works better for you. You can see the difference in your hair – or, maybe that's my trained eye because mama is a hair dresser 🙂

Can you share which hair products (shampoo and conditioner) do you use which are sulfate-free and silicone-free?
I have a set of 3 different shampoos/conditioners that I rotate between. I'll do a roundup post of the ones that I use but in the meantime, the Hask Keratin shampoo/conditioner set shown above is one of my favorites!

Hi, I'm not sure if you know, but the Hask products designate their different lines (i.e., Keratin, Argan oil) but the color of the lids on the products. Keratin products all have silver lids and Argan oil products all have blue lids. In the pictures you have the keratin shampoo and conditioner with the Argan Oil serum and the Argan Oil shampoo and conditioner with the Keratin serum. This may have had a substantive effect on the results of your tests.
Oh thank you for letting me know! Not sure if I had mixed them up when I actually used it or if it was just when I took pictures, but thanks.

I have natural curly hair that has a brittle feeling on all my ends I haven’t colored since November and I used nature tint which is plant based dye my hair was dry and brittle before dying had purchased deva curl products no poo recently tried the hask protein keratin my question is what is my hair lacking to feel brittle and not soft? Do I need protein or what please help?
Hi Tracy! I would definitely recommend a shampoo with high amounts of Keratin oil. Typically dry brittle hair indicates that the cuticles of the hair shaft are open and a keratin treatment would help seal them. I’ve actually been using this one recently and it’s been wonderful!
Hope that helps!

I found this blog accidentally and tried the Keratin shampoo and Argan Oil conditioner. What a difference! I have fine wavy hair and a lot of it so I have to be careful what I use or it gets weighed down. THANK YOU! My hair looked fuller and felt better than it ever has. I am using the Argan Oil conditioner once a week (I only wash my hair 2x a week, use dry shampoo between time). Use a small bit of light oil on the ends 2x weekly as well. Been trying to grow it out about 2-3 more inches. (Jut past my shoulders now.) The price is very reasonable. Like the smell. Appreciate the advice.
Hi Steffie! It makes me so happy that my post was useful! This line is amazingly good and I can’t believe it’s drugstore! I actually will be reviewing another shampoo / conditioner line in a couple weeks that I’ve been using for the past 2 weeks and you will definitely need to read that one too especially since you have fine hair like me! It’s really helped me with breakage and my hair feels stronger than ever!

Thank you for sharing your experience. This is highly appreciated! Our hair is our crown glory, so it annoys me when it looks dull and dead.
