Nothing sets the tone for a trip more than where you choose to stay. For Adrian and I’s recent couple’s trip to Portland, Oregon, I knew I wanted a place that was conveniently located and offered some of the unique charm local to the city. The Hi Lo Hotel is a recent addition to the Portland scene as it only recently opened its doors in May 2017 but I can definitely say that this hotel has set the bar high in providing a luxurious modern retreat for the weary traveler!
Welcome, Wanderer
The Hi Lo Hotel is a boutique hotel with 120-rooms and part of the Marriot Autograph Collection of unique hotels. The location is located in downtown Portland and within walking distance of many of the popular spots — 1.5 block walk to Voodoo Donuts, another block over to the Portland Saturday Market, and 15 minutes away from the row of eateries near Powell Books. In the other direction and 10 minutes away is a main shopping district (tax-free shopping here, y’all!) and there was no shortage of Nike rental bikes available everywhere as well!
Even before entering the Hi Lo hotel, I was greeted by the most polite doorman who then opened the door for us and it was the perfect welcome for our trip. Once in the lobby, it was like walking into the home I always wanted — mid-century modern aesthetic with clean lines and smooth curved angles. I loved the combination of neutral greys mixed with forest greens and even millennial pink. And plus, a swing in the lobby. No big deal right?
Blazer: Bell Sleeve Frill Blazer – under $20! (just ordered in white!)
Top: LOFT Wild Orchid Mixed Media Blouse – extra 40% off!
Bottom: Articles of Society ‘Sarah’ Jeans (similar)
Shoes: Sam Edelman ‘Raisa’
The Lo Bar was just on the other side of the lobby and offered all-day complimentary coffee… I mean, can I just go ahead and move in?
The mixture of textiles was also on point. From the plush velvet couches to the soft cowhide rugs to the smooth marble flooring, the lobby was a beautiful mix of luxe glamour and down-to-earth coziness. And can you guys see those beautiful gold-accented track lights? I may have been eyeing them the entire time thinking about if we could have them installed in our home!
And you guys, just a note on the hospitality at the Hi Lo Hotel because you could not help but notice the difference. Every interaction we had with a staff member at the hotel was incredibly warm, friendly, and they all took such a genuine interest in us. My favorite people always ended up being the front doorman as they had such charisma and personality. In chatting with them, on many occasions they even ended up doubling as our concierge, recommending fabulous local spots to for us to see and eat so that we would make the most of our trip. I even had a few members of the hotel volunteer to help me with traffic control as I took pictures outside the hotel for the blog (not even because I asked for it but just because!) — I mean, that is service.
Raw + Refined
While the rooms are not big, the attention to detail is what really sets the Hi Lo Hotel apart. The floors had the option to be heated (yes, heated!), the bathrooms had rain shower heads, and there was even custom hand-painted wallpaper that lined the entryway. True to the “hi-lo” name, these high-end refined elements were balanced with raw materials such as reclaimed barn wood and concrete beams that gave it an organic natural feel.
We stayed in the top floor of the 6-story hotel and let me just say, I could not get enough of the oversized windows and the incredible view! With the time-zone difference, Adrian and I were actually able to naturally wake up to catch the sunrise every morning and it was such a memorable way to start each day.
The Hi-Lo Hotel also makes a point to include as much local Portland into each room as they can and I loved discovering gems such as the accent pillows that were crafted by the local Pendleton Woolen Mills and even trying the custom-designed local Maak Lab bath products that were so luxurious (you can bet I took some extra samples of these home!).
Pajamas: Victoria’s Secret Satin Boxer PJ
I took advantage of the room service on our second day and it did not disappoint! My eggs were cooked to perfection and I loved the crispy potatoes along with the brew of French-press coffee.
Modern Mexican
Alto Bajo (get it? it’s Spanish for “high low”) is the adjoining restaurant and I could not have been more excited to see that it was Mexican food! Hello on-site guac anyone? 😉 Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, we stopped in for dinner on our first night in the city and it was so nice not to have to worry about figuring out where to eat after our long flight.
The menu takes traditional Mexican cooking and combines it with the local ingredients of the Pacific Northwest to give it a unique spin. We started off with the ceviche and as someone who personally loves ceviche (I order it every time I see it on the menu), the Alto Bajo had some of the best I’ve ever tried. The fish was incredibly fresh and I loved the addition of the blue corn chips that gave it a nice crunch! I also ordered the agua fresca to drink after hearing that it was made with locally available, in-season fruits. My drink used watermelon but apparently we had just missed their popular marionberry version that’s available in the summertime using the fruit that was developed by Oregon State University!
We truly loved our stay at the Hi Lo Hotel and it was the perfect way to get the most out of our Portland experience. The hotel really knows how to mix contrasting elements to give it a vibe that was playful, inviting, and sophisticated all at once. If you’re looking for a home away from home while experiencing some of the uniqueness of Portland, be sure to book a stay at the Hi-Lo Hotel!
