Toys have come such a long way since the days I was a kid. It’s actually been really interesting being on the other side of the story now that I’m a parent buying toys for my kids! Recently, I was able to get my hands on the Moose Toys Magic Mixies Crystal Ball, this year’s winner of the 2022 Creative Toy of the Year award.
The packaging is colorful, vibrant, and hints at a magic spell that made my kids super excited to open up their Magic Mixie Magical Crystal Ball to try it out for themselves! They quickly opened up the box in the playroom and got it ready without any help. As a parent, I love that the box was easy to open and batteries are already installed – it’s ready to play right out of the box!
First off, the toy contains two main items: a light-up interactive wand and a misting crystal ball. My kids immediately noticed that upon waving the magic wand, the crystal ball would awaken and respond with a combination of light, sound, voice, and color. We paused to take a moment to learn the steps of the Creation Spell, but it wasn’t long before my kids were waving the wand and making real mist appear from the Magic Mixie Crystal Ball! For the grown-ups, I will say that the misting is definitely the coolest part in this process and added to the real sense of magic happening on our command. As we performed the last step of the Creation Spell, we said the final magic words: “MAGICUS MIXUS”! The mist began to disappear and slowly our crystal ball revealed our surprise Magic Mixie!
There are two different Magic Mixie options, pink and blue, that you can choose from when purchasing the item. Once revealed from the crystal ball, the Magic Mixies can be removed to provide an additional way of playing and interacting! We quickly discovered that if we tickled the Mixie’s belly, it would say “Magicus Fortunus” and we could ask it a yes/no question. It would predict the answer by lighting up the gems on its forehead. We could even use the magic wand to cast different spells on the Mixie, and it would play a color-matching game.
The best part is that the magical mist of the Magic Mixies Crystal Ball can be performed again and again. Similarly, non-Magic Mixies can also be revealed in the crystal ball as long as it’s about the same size or smaller than the 8” Magic Mixies plush. To reset, press the front button to see the item on the platform disappear, and toggle the back switch to reset the Creation Spell along with misting! Dylan actually loved going through the same creation spell process a few times, each with varying levels of theatrics, to make action figures, stuffed animals, and dinosaurs disappear and reappear again and again.
When the crystal ball isn’t in Creation mode, it can also be used as a Night-Light! It makes for such a magical bedtime each night. The Night-Light works with or without the mist, but it does look really neat to have the colorful mist create a soft light effect at night. The magic wand can also be used to change the color of the light, and the night light auto-magically turns itself off after 30 minutes to save on battery.
The Magic Mixies Crystal Ball is such a great new toy product release, and we’ve all had such a great time as a family getting to enjoy the different ways to interact with the different features!
