For the longest time, I never really did much with Mei’s hair. She wakes up with the worst bedhead — we’re talking a big rat’s nest in the back and even dousing it with detangler wasn’t good enough on some days. At most, I’d get her hair brushed before heading out the door and maybe put in a bow to look like I put in some effort. 😆 But, I’ve recently learned how to do messy pigtail buns and am so excited to share the easy step-by-step tutorial with you!
Thankfully I found myself a new hair brush that has changed the detangling process and Mei actually asks me to do her hair every morning now! Her favorite hair style is definitely the messy pigtail buns and fortunately it’s a look that I can finish in 2 minutes. She gets compliments on them all the time and they’re also the perfect for keeping her hair out of her face for school! Scroll to the end for a step-by-step video tutorial — enjoy!

Tangle Teezer Original | rat tail comb | hair bows
mini bobby pins (great for kids!) | mini elastic hair ties (not shown)
About a month ago, I was turned onto the Tangle Teezer and wow, it has been a game changer! With over 22,000 reviews on Amazon and 4.6/5 stars, I feel like I’ve been living under a rock since I didn’t know about this amazing hair brush. I’ve used the Wet Brush in the past personally that has been good for detangling my hair personally, but the difference with the Tangle Teezer is that it’s the easiest to use on knotted hair (no tugging!), plus it really boosts the shine! Either way, it’s super affordable and definitely worth a shot if you and/or your little ones deal with major bedhead in the mornings!
Other essentials I’ve found include a rat tail comb as they’re super handy not only for getting that separated part, but also just for cleanly picking up hair for braiding. I also LOVE these mini hair bows from Amazon as they come in the cutest prints and are super affordable too!
The steps for messy pigtail buns is super straight-forward:
- Using a rat tail comb, evenly split the hair down a center part all the way down the back. Use a hair tie to section off the half you’re not working on to prevent it from interfering.
- Tie each half into a high pigtail, only pulling the hair halfway through the hair tie on the last loop.
- Wrap the tail end of the pigtail around the base, securing it with a bobby pin.
- Split the top pigtail loop in half and use another hair tie to wrap it around the pigtail.
- Pull out and slightly loosen pieces of each bun as preferred.
- Accessorize with a mini hair bow.
And done! I recorded a short video explaining the process and hopefully this will help show the different steps mentioned above.
