Anybody else been caught off guard with all the rainy days lately? Dylan told me the other day that he loves the smell of the air right before it rains and while I have to agree that it’s been such a nice change from the typical 100-degree August heat, now that we’re going on Day 5 of the wet weather, I’ve had get a little creative on how to entertain these kids! We’re on our last stretch before school starts and I’ve been looking for rainy day activities for kids we can get creative with and have some fun even if we’re stuck inside the house trying to stay dry.
Rainy Day Activities for Kids:
Play Charades
My kids are finally both old enough now to understand the rules of this game and it’s definitely made for some good times! The rules are simple: one person will act something out, and the others will guess what they are trying to act out. I usually have a few slips of paper with simple drawn out ideas such as a ballerina or a cat that I know my kids can act out, but other ideas include a book, movie, song, celebrity, fictional character, or even TV show that everyone is familiar with.
Pretend To Be Your Favorite Character
This one is a natural extension of charades as sometimes Dylan and Mei get so caught up pretending to be certain characters in charades that they don’t want to stop! We have a special section of their closet with costumes for Dylan and Mei (although sometimes they make do with their character pajamas too! 😂). Dylan is all about the superheroes and has quite the collection of capes and masks from a superhero birthday party we had a couple years ago. And if you watch my Insta Stories, you’ve no doubt seen Mei with her Frozen Princess Anna costume on and she will often request that the whole family get dressed up with her a la our previous Halloween!
Discover a new mystery toy
Nothing makes for a better day in than a Kinder Joy treat! Kinder is one of the most popular confectionery brands in the world and I couldn’t have been more excited when they finally made their US debut at the end of last year. In fact, Kinder Joy has been around the world since 2001 and is sold in more than 100 countries. Over the past 17 years, more than 3 billion eggs have been sold. The eggs are a treat like no other as there are two separately sealed halves — a treat side that is made of two deliciously creamy layers and a second side that contains an exciting mystery toy! The high quality ingredients mean that I don’t feel guilty and I love discovering their mystery toy as much as they do. Most recently Dylan had one where he had to put together pieces to a ball and I loved watching his little engineering mind work!
Dress up In Mommy and Daddy’s Closet
My kids love rummaging through our closet to dress up like mini adults and I get such a hoot out of it too! Mei loves all the jewelry and even asks to put on my makeup, while Dylan goes for Adrian’s ties and suit jackets. They’ll pretend to “go to work” and I love watching how they perceive of what adult life is like!
Fun in the tub
And finally when all else fails, I run a bubble bath and let them play in the tub! The soapy bubbles are always a hit and we have quite the collection of bath toys to keep them busy. The best part of this rainy day activities for kids is that if mommy needs a break, I get a chance to sit down and take it easy with my kids as well. 😊
What are some of your favorite rainy day activities for kids?
Thank you to Kinder for sponsoring this post.

I am welcoming the rainy weather with open arms! It’s sooo nice to finally feel the cooler temps and low humidity. The downside: Being couped up in the House. Charades is always fun, too!

These are fantastic ideas.. I don’t have kids yet, but totally remember playing dress up (and makeup!) in my mother’s closet. So much better options than sitting and watching TV.
