Lately it seems like my life has been all about go, go, go. Work commitments have ramped up for me recently and I’ve been juggling the kids solo on the home front as Adrian has been also traveling for almost an entire month with back to back weeks. Then add in a nasty little stomach bug that hit me and the kids a few days ago and needless to say, I felt like I was in over my head. I was feeling stressed, anxious, and completely overwhelmed.
With a demanding full-time job, 2 little kids who depend on me, and a home that needs taking care of, it seems like I’m constantly multitasking and juggling responsibilities. Most of the time I’m on top of my todo list and but with all the unexpected commitments lately, I’ve definitely been feeling stretched thin.
Society can glorify being “busy” but there’s also so much importance to having downtime. I knew for me, I needed a reset. And so, I took advantage of a day when Adrian was home, cleared out my calendar, and scheduled a self-care date for myself!
5 WAYS TO PRACTICE SELF-CARE:
1) DETOX
First things first — and that’s food! I tend to get into some bad food habits when I’m stressed / anxious, so I try to reset that by starting off the morning with a green juice! I find that it helps get me into a detoxing mindset and also gives my body a good dose of healthy nutrients.
2) BREAK A SWEAT
Fitness is a huge part of my life but for those weeks where I’m working 80 hours in the office with my co-workers, my workouts unfortunately go by the wayside. One of my first priorities in my self-care regime is getting a sweat session in and I love the rush of feel-good endorphins from a good workout. Yoga has been my go-to for years when I need to check in with my body but since I’ve been in surgery recovery mode for the past few weeks and haven’t been cleared for yoga just yet, I’ve since started up boxing classes and it has been amazing! The partner boxing classes at Vital Fitness Studio on Saturday mornings have been my latest addiction and I never thought it would be the stress relief that it is! I leave those boxing classes drenched in sweat but feeling clear-headed, accomplished, and ready to take on my next challenge!
3) RECONNECT WITH MY FAMILY
Long hours often mean I don’t have enough time with my kids so I make a point to reconnect with them as part of my self-care ritual. I get so much fulfillment and happiness from spending time with my little ones and at 3 / 5 years old, they have the funniest remarks as well as insightful stories to share!
4) MASK, NOURISH, REFLECT
It wouldn’t be a self-care ritual without a face mask! Korean skincare has always been something I’ve kept my finger on and these 2-step rubber masks are all the rage right now! They are incredible for penetrating the skin and delivering unbeatable results — it’s a mini spa moment at home and I take advantage of the alone time to reflect on my thoughts, recharge my mind, and just let myself be!
5) KICK BACK + INDULGE
And finally, to close out a day of self care, there’s nothing better than soaking it away in a bubble bath with a glass of wine, am I right? I was actually super excited when we bought this house 2 years ago as I’ve always wanted a Jacuzzi bathtub! There’s something so relaxing about feeling the rush of water from whirlpool jets and it creates the most amazing foam bubble bath that lasts for hours! The Day Owl Rosé has been my latest wine of choice to unwind with at the end of the day as it’s been the perfect change of pace as I’m already craving spring! I love the light, naturally sweet flavor of rosé and the Day Owl wine is a crisp, fruit-forward California Rosé with notes of floral red fruit with vibrant orange zest that makes it delicious especially when paired with a bowl of fruit (my fave has been raspberries!).
The wine primarily uses the Barbera varietal, which is meant to be enjoyed young, in other words, right now. I love the flavors of dark cherry, dried strawberry, plum, lavender and vanilla, perfect for whatever the day throws at it. Try it on its own or in a fun cocktail. Bubble bath optional. 😊
I know there are many times in my life when things get busier than I expected and having self-care dates to help my mind and body reset back to normal are so important! I’d love to hear if you have any self-care tips or rituals that you follow!
