A couple weeks ago we celebrated Dylan’s 6th birthday with a trip out to Six Flags over Texas and OMG, it was so much fun! I personally haven’t been to Six Flags in over 10 years and it is even more fun than I remembered. We had Dylan invite his best friend and their family to come with us to celebrate his special day and I can honestly say that the adults had just as much fun as the kids did! I did a bit of research before going and with our recent trip experience still fresh, I wanted to share some insider Six Flags tips if you’re planning your next trip out to the theme park!
Best Six Flags Tips:
TIP 1: Buy your tickets online beforehand.
Skip the ticket booth by purchasing your tickets online beforehand! Even better is that there are almost always online-only special offers as well as special rates if you’re planning a group outing. The season pass is another option that we considered as it will pay for itself if you’re planning on visiting the park just twice!
TIP 2: Splurge for the FLASH Pass.
This is probably my BIGGEST recommendation that I can give and it made all the difference in how we were able to spend our day. Lines can get pretty long, especially on the weekends, but the FLASH Pass allows you to skip the line and enter at the special FLASH Pass entrance instead! Even for the most popular rides around the park, we never had to wait more than 5 minutes. With little kids and the heat, waiting in lines can be a buzzkill but the FLASH Pass ensures that your time is spent on rides instead of standing around!
TIP 3: Arrive At Least 30 Minutes Before Park Opening
The parking lot is enormous and there is quite a bit of walking involved just to get from where you can park to the entrance of the theme park. Take a picture of where you parked also or mark it on Google Maps so you won’t be lost at the end of a long day.
TIP 4: Download the Six Flags Mobile App
The mobile app was such a huge help for us throughout the day. Not only did it help provide us with live navigation through various attractions throughout the park, but it also shows the wait time. We were also able to filter through rides that the kids were able to ride given the height limitation as well as see other info such as the ride duration, max speed, and even elevation (so useful for parents if you’re deciding if a ride would be good for your kids or even yourself!). Restaurant menus for all the food spots across the park are also included which also came in so handy when we were deciding on a lunch spot for the group!
TIP 5: Bring Insulated Water Bottles
You can’t bring food inside the park, but water is ok. It definitely gets pretty hot being outside for several hours so I HIGHLY recommend bringing several insulated water bottles that can stay chilled throughout the day. My favorite is the S’well bottle as I’ve found it to keep my liquids cold for seriously hours!
TIP 6: Bring A Waterproof Case and Change of Clothes
I didn’t realize that there were so many rides where I would get splashed on and potentially drenched! I would definitely recommend having a waterproof phone case with you for those rides as well as a change of clothes. The water rides were a great way to cool off during the day and I highly recommend!
And that’s it! I cannot recommend Six Flags Over Texas enough and we’re hoping to make this an annual tradition as it was so much for the kids and adults alike. Let me know if you have any other Six Flags tips that I missed and/or share your own theme park experience in the comments below!

We visited our nearest 6 Flags a few years ago and we found going on a weekday in early June just before schools let out allowed us to avoid crowds and the flash passes weren’t necessary. We did, however, buy our passes ahead of time and brought a bag with towels and bathing suits since our park has a water park attached too. It was a lot of fun.
