This past week has felt like a whirlwind. I think I’ve gone through so many heavy emotions — anger, frustration, sadness, uncertainty — but still I am hopeful and grateful as I know that there is also so much growth and change that is coming out of this season. I’ve spent a lot of time listening, reading, and learning as I figure out the actions on how to support Black Lives Matter and how I can take to become more actively anti-racist.
I know that I am not an expert on this and have myself turned to many resources to educate. It’s been a bit overwhelming and no person’s journey is the same, but I thought it might be helpful to share some of my process with you all as well. These are the messages, videos, and voices that have made a huge impact on me the past few days so I’m passing it along here to help amplify as I seek to ally in the #BlackLivesMatter movement.
How to Support Black Lives Matter
Top 2 Resources To Understand + Fight Racism
@themanacho This IGTV is incredibly well put together from a man that actually is from my hometown of Austin, TX. He explains so clearly white privilege as well as the reasoning behind the current riots in a way that is so relatable. The entire video is under 10 minutes and I highly recommend giving it a watch.
@ohhappydani I recently discovered Dani’s in the midst of all this and just fell in love with everything she has been doing on her account. Not only are her drawings beautiful, powerful, and engaging (see below), but she has also been holding IG live sessions where she’s been sharing how to turn our awareness into action!

2 Podcasts I’m Listening To Ally with Black Lives Matter
Code Switch from NPR Listening to NPR is one of my favorite things to do (honestly it takes me back to my childhood as I would hear it sitting in my dad’s car on the way to school) and this podcast tackles some of the big topics about racism that need to happen. Seriously my go-to podcast to listen to whenever I’m at my computer working right now.
Pod Save The People I love podcasts that let you listen in on a conversation and this one always invites incredibly well-spoken activists, authors, and even politicians to share their perspectives.
3 Movies I’m Watching to Ally with Black Lives Matter
13th (Netflix) This one is first on my list of movies to watch as I’ve heard countless good recommendations for it! I love a good documentary and this one analyzes the criminalization of African Americans and the US prison boom.
Dear White People (Netflix) A comedy-drama, which sounds perfect for when I want to watch something a little lighter yet still filled with lots of meaning.
The Hate You Give (Hulu / Amazon Prime Video) The reviews looks crazy good for this one and it looks to be an eye-opener on equal rights.

Books To Educate Kids
Sulwe This is one of my favorite kids’ books and it’s such a sweet sweet story about skin color!
Below are a few additional books that I just purchased to read to my kids:

Donate
Color of Change A force of 1.7 million members that move decision makers in corporations and government to end injustice. I am proud to have already donated to this organization as they are making some of the biggest impact to create a more human world for Black people.
The Conscious Kid This organization works directly with schools and other non-profits to provide free education and content on their social media platforms. They are an incredible group that is fighting racism at the earliest age and 100% believe in their mission.
I am learning from those in the Black community and understanding how I can be more actively anti-racist. Now is truly a unique time when we’re all under quarantine and experiencing massive unrest with systemic racism, yet it can also be an incredible opportunity for us all to grow. As a mom, an Asian American, and as a human, I’m learning how to change and hope that my journey can help someone else.
We all have a role in the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Do you have any tips on how to support Black Lives Matter? Let me know in a comment below!
This is so important! I also love that you have art nearby that showcases unity. Such pretty murals!
This is a great list of resources! Another podcast that I listened to last week and found to be really eye-opening as well is 1619. Would highly recommend! Thanks for compiling this, there are some resources here I’m definitely going to check out! x
Thank you for sharing these resources! I had been wanted to watch Dear White People but haven’t gotten around to it. I will definitely put it on my list. Love all the murals, too!
Lovely post. Racism is a curse, and it’s super important to educate against it. Loved it.
I really want to watch The Hate You Give, but I’ve been dying to read the book for even longer and I always get so much more from books than I do movies, so I’m going to try to wait until I get my hands on the book first.
This post is a great list of resources that I’m sure is going to do a lot of good. It’s great that you took the time to share them 😊
While “The Hate U Give” may be on streaming services, I highly recommend reading the book as the primary action! Films are excellent, but adaptions always miss things 😉 These are excellent things to do with your time, following the Blackout week. I hope you continue to learn and grow post-social media trends.
Thank you for sharing all of these. As a children’s librarian I put together a list of books for kids that I shared on my fb. Sulwe is beautiful. I’ve also joined an online allyship book club to better educate myself. This month we are reading “Me and White Supremacy.”
These are such great resources. We all need to do our part to make sure that Black Lives Matter isn’t just a hashtag. We need to live these values every day!
Love the idea of educating our children with these books!
