There’s a certain simplicity when it comes to wearing a monochromatic palette and I find I tend towards simple pairings when my schedule becomes busy. Black and white is about as classic as can be and has a way of looking professional and put together without a lot of effort. On the other hand, monochromatic colors can also have a tendency to look a little too controlled or even boring, so I wanted to share a few easy ways to mix up your black and white this season to create outfits that are chic, polished, and on trend!
LAYER ON TEXTURE
The easiest way to change up the standard monochromatic palette look is with texture! I started with your standard black trouser but mixed it up with this soft, almost silky white blouse. I love the addition of the mesh yoke paneling to give it something different and it even adds just a little edge to the otherwise feminine frill and embroidery details. Mesh is a huge trend that’s definitely having a moment right now (thanks to the athleisure trend, in my opinion!) and I love that there are ways to wear it without looking risque or like you’re headed to the club.

PLAY WITH A MONOCHROMATIC PALETTE PATTERN
Print mixing is a breeze when you’re sticking with monochrome colors and it’s a great way to add in patterns such as stripes, florals, gingham — the sky’s the limit! I have a soft spot for florals so of course the daisies in this top were a must for me!

MIX IN METALLICS
To coordinate with the classic black and white, I love mixing in metals such as gold. Throw in some gold accessories (these clear resin hoops go with everything and are so classic!) or add a belt or bag with a gold statement hardware. It’s an easy way to keep the elevated look of a monochromatic palette outfit while adding in a mix of media.

ADD IN FUN DETAILS
Because black and white can look a little stuffy, make sure your look has some details that take it down a notch and make it fun! I love the ruffle details of this top both at the collar neckline and at the sleeve hem that make it feminine and delicate. Pair it with slacks and a bow waist sash and the finished look is still professional with a side of fun! I personally love the popularity of the paperbag pant that’s happening right now and it’s especially a great option if you’re looking for something chic that you can wear to work!
