I love getting glammed up this time of year and besides getting to put on a pretty dress, it’s also a time I love playing around with fun day to night makeup! For those nights when I’m going out and want to be a little extra, I go for something that I can easily transition to from my usual daytime look. Urban Decay was one of the first brands that I started using when I got into makeup back in college and I always loved their beautiful shimmery eyeshadows and the fact that all their products are cruelty free (thank you, UD!). I then went on to own and love the Urban Decay Naked palettes which I still keep in my regular rotation cause they’re that good. Well, Urban Decay just upped the ante again and has changed the eyeshadow game altogether with the recent launch of their Distortion eyeshadow palette!
Y’all, this palette is kind of genius.
Before we head into the shadows, let’s take a moment to appreciate the prismatic beauty of their packaging shall we? I love the faceted lid and the holographic effect is a perfect representation of the transformative shadows inside the palette. The case is sturdy and I love the magnetic closure that makes opening/closing a breeze. Plus, the lid actually stays open on its own so it’s perfect if you’re a mom like me and might need one hand to entertain your little ones! 😆
Ok, on to the eyeshadows for your day to night makeup look! What really sets this palette apart from the rest is the set of five shifty eyeshadows on the top row. These are meant to be added on top of the other eyeshadows to give them a multidimensional “shift”. Each of the five gorgeous colors are designed to transform an ordinary eyeshadow into a mesmerizing duotone. Each shift shade has a reflective hue to it and while they can be layered over any shadow to change the effect, the palette is actually arranged in vertical trios that give you recommended combinations! I also need a few ideas on how to pair certain colors when I’m first starting out with a palette so this was definitely an appreciated addition for me!
As for the remaining 10 colors in the Urban Decay Distortion eyeshadow palette, 9 of these are brand new shades and live up to the Urban Decay reputation of being velvety smooth and blending like a dream. My favorites are Rogue (used in my tutorial here) as well as Territorial (such a gorgeous bronze) as well as Trash Talk (a beautiful pink with subtle shimmer). At first I was afraid these colors would be too bold and vibrant for me to wear, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that the colors are actually more muted upon application than how they look in the palette! Personally, I find that this makes the palette for usable if you’re like me and want easy-to-wear looks for everyday.
I also discovered that the 15 eyeshadows in this palette are actually slightly bigger than the average Urban Decay eyeshadow (o.06 oz compared to the normal 0.05 oz). This palette is definitely a great value for the price — just $49!
The Urban Decay Distortion eyeshadow palette was made for those of us wanting one palette to take them from day to night in a breeze! The 2 bottom rows of eyeshadows are perfect for creating that gorgeous daytime look while the shifter shades are exactly what you need to kick it up a notch for nighttime! I’m sharing my day-to-night looks below:
Daytime Makeup Look using UD Distortion Eyeshadow Palette
The first color I couldn’t wait to try was Rogue. I’ve always loved the contrast of purple to bring out brown eyes and I was surprised to find the color to be more subdued than what I saw in the pan. A medium purple with hints of pink undertone, Rogue has a pearly sheen to it and I just loved how smooth it was to apply! I added just a hint of depth with a touch of Blackout in the outer corner before blending it out. I love that this look wasn’t too dramatic and was something that I could pull off even in the daytime. I’m usually all about the neutrals when it comes to eyeshadow colors but I actually found that the more muted color payoff of the colors in the Distortion palette made them more wearable for everyday!
Nighttime Makeup Look using UD Distortion Eyeshadow Palette
And now to have some fun with the shifty shades! I patted on Mind Game, the iridescent purple shifting shade that coordinated with Rogue. OMG the result was just so amazing. What was originally a muted purple eyeshadow look instantly transformed into an insanely pigmented violet eyeshadow that had an almost foiled effect. I loved how the transformer shade was so easy to layer on and the multidimensional duochrome effect really gave my eyeshadows that pop! I finished it off with a bit of extra glitter and lined my upper lashline with just a touch of Heavy Metal Glitter Liner in Grind.
My Makeup Arsenal
In creating these two looks, I actually revisited an old favorite while also trying out some new products from the Urban Decay line. I primed my lid first with Urban Decay Primer Potion, a product that was actually the very first eyeshadow primer that I ever used (anybody else remember the genie-bottle packaging that it used to be in?). I was reminded of why I loved this primer in the first place so many years ago as I love it’s not too thick and doesn’t require me to tug on my delicate eyelid skin to smooth it out. The product actually works all day to keep my eyeshadow from creasing and I know this is one primer I’ll be going back to using regularly!
Another favorite I revisited was the 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Zero. The pencil is one of the creamiest I’ve ever tried yet dries almost instantly to a waterproof finish. I’ve actually been using this eyeliner regularly now on my waterline and love that it actually stays put in that tricky area. If you ever want eyeliner that stays put during sweaty workouts or those nights when you’re out dancing, this eyeliner is your answer!
I was also excited to try out the newest Troublemaker mascara from Urban Decay. This mascara builds up incredibly well without any sign of clumping and if you’re looking for a mascara that actually lives up to its claim of staying on smudge-free for hours. The bristles on the brush are small which actually made it easy to target the corners of my eyes and really create that fanned-out eyelash look!
For my lips, I used the Urban Decay Vice Lipstick in Backtalk paired with the 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencil in Rush as my daytime look. It’s the perfect combination for a mauve-nude pink with a satin finish. To amp it up a bit for night, I went for Vice Lipstick in Big Bang paired with the 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencil in the same color. The bright metallized pink was perfect to complement the bold eyeshadow look! The Vice lipstick formula one of my favorites as I love the smooth and creamy application that doesn’t dry out my lips and actually lasts — I actually had a big bowl of ramen the other night with this lipstick on and it was still almost completely intact after dinner!
And finally, to seal in my makeup look, I applied the Urban Decay All-Nighter Setting Spray. I’ve actually used this product for a couple years now and it’s been my go-to for those times when I have an important event and need my makeup to look good the entire night. True to its name, this spray actually works to help my makeup stay intact all night and doesn’t make my skin feel tight or dry. The mist is superfine and weightless, and I can spray multiple spritzes around my face without having to worry about droplets messing up my makeup or any feelings of discomfort afterwards!

I am seriously swooning over this palette. I’ve seen it a few times in the past couple of weeks and the different makeup looks you can do with it are just stunning! I absolutely adore vibrant colors like these but rarely use them so I never buy myself full palettes. This would be a good one to have for those special occasions!
