Mid-century modern design has been having a moment the last few years and I am 👏 here 👏 for 👏 it! Adrian (my husband) actually is really big on home design and turned me onto mid-century modern style way back to when we were dating in college. I instantly fell in love with the simple clean lines and sleek minimalistic style.
About 5 years ago, we purchased an actual home built during the mid-century era (1960s). While the renovations have almost been a labor of love over the last few years, the home decor side of owning our own mid-century modern home has been so much fun! I wanted to give you a peek inside our master Mid Century Modern bedroom as I’ve made a few updates to it over the years and have totally fallen in love with this master bedroom space that is our sanctuary.
5 Easy Updates to Elevate a Mid Century Modern Bedroom
Make It Lounge Ready

I especially love the unpretentious vibe of mid-century modern decor as it’s all about creating a space that’s chic yet casual and relaxed. Our bedroom is surprisingly spacious and there was always the front half of the room that needed to be better utilized. I had been on the lookout to add a bench or lounge seating to the front of the bed for some time now and absolutely fell in love with the Lina Swivel Chair from Design Within Reach.
Design Within Reach is one of our favorite places to find quality home furnishings that are well made and absolutely timeless. Fun fact, the first piece of furniture Adrian and I ever bought post college was this amazing couch (similar to this current one) and while it was a huge splurge for us at the time, the couch lasted well over 10 years and was the piece we always got so many compliments about from guests!
The contours of the Lina Swivel Chair are what make it most appealing. I love the sloping curves that complement the softness of our master bedroom, and it definitely makes a statement without being too loud. Plus, it’s incredibly comfortable and it’s even become a new favorite spot for my kids to sit with me as we read stories!
Add Character With Prints / Patterns
Mid-century modern decor isn’t shy when it comes to prints, patterns, and pops of color! I found this rug a few years ago on an unplanned trip to Ikea and absolutely loved the geometric stripes in a colorway that still kept with the relaxing calm vibe of our master bedroom. Pllus, there were even throw pillows that coordinated for a cohesive bedroom look!
Fill Wall Space With A Round Mirror

For the longest time, I never knew what to do about blank walls, but adding a mirror is a great option! The round mirror is an iconic piece of the mid-century modern home and I love it centered above a dresser or vanity station.
Add In Greenery

I’m not very good at keeping plants alive (my mom is the green thumb in the family and always jokes that I have the black thumb! 😆), but that won’t stop me from adding some faux greenery to my home! Faux plants have really come a long way and look incredibly realistic. My favorite houseplant is hands-down the fiddle leaf fig tree and while we did own a real live one for several years, ultimately our home didn’t have enough natural sunlight to be able to keep it alive. But, this 6′ faux fiddle leaf fig has been with us now for over 5 years and I absolutely love it!
I also keep a small snake plant on my nightstand just to balance the greenery on the other side of the room. This one is real and fingers cross that I’ll keep this one alive for a bit longer! I love the addition of nature in a room, especially when it comes to mid-century modern design, as it is the perfect complement to a design style that values natural elements such as exposed wood and untouched brick walls.
Keep It Streamlined and Functional
And finally, I have to remind myself not to go too overboard with home decor sometimes as a tenet of mid-century modern home design is its emphasis on simplicity. There’s nothing fussy or formal, and pieces are kept true to their original essence. The focus is one of form following function and it’s also a style that has perfectly transitioned with us from being young singles in our 20s to now busy parents in our 30s. It’s a lived-in vibe that’s comfortable yet elevated.

I love being able to unwind at the end of the day in our master bedroom and even though it’s taken a few years for the space to really come together, I absolutely love it.
