It’s been almost a month now that the kids have been back in school, and we’re slowly starting to find a rhythm for our day to day schedule. Mornings can still be a challenge at times as classes start promptly at 7:45 am and oftentimes I’m still calling for the kids to get out of bed come 7:00 am! As a mom though, it’s a priority for me to make sure that my kids are still getting a good breakfast and that I’m sending them to school ready to take on their day. Read on for 5 easy breakfast ideas for kids that are packed with nutrients that will serve as brain food for your kids!
5 Easy Breakfast Ideas for Kids that Maximize Brain Power
1. Brainiac Yogurts
I started my kids on Greek yogurt for breakfast when they were babies and it’s one breakfast that they consistently look forward to having every morning! I recently learned about Brainiac Kids Yogurts and was completely sold on the fact that these yogurts are packed with brain-fueling nutrients like Omega-3 DHA, Omega-3 ALA, and choline. All of these nutrients play key roles in memory as well as brain function and development, yet most kids don’t consume enough on a daily basis.
Omega-3 DHA, Omega-3 ALA, and choline together to make up what Brainiac Kids has termed the “Brainpack”. With just a single 4 oz serving of Brainiac Kids Yogurts, kids get 100% of their daily choline needs and 80% of their daily Omega-3 DHA needs!
Brainiac Kids Yogurts come in both 2 oz tubes and 4-oz drinks with fun flavors such as strawberry, strawberry banana, mixed berry, and cherry vanilla. While kids love the taste, as parents it’s also good news in that Brainiac yogurts also contain 50% less sugar than the leading kids’ yogurts at only 5g! Plus each serving is packed with 4g of protein, probiotics, and of course Omega-3 DHA, Omega-3 ALA, and choline so I can truly feel good about giving these yogurts to my kids and know that they’re fueling their brains with food that will help them learn!
I pick up Brainiac Kids Yogurts from our local Central Market, but they’re also available at Walmart and Hy-Vee. You can use the Store Locator to find the location nearest you and click here to also save $1 on any Brainiac Kids Yogurt flavor multipack!
2. Eggs
Eggs are another breakfast staple around here and at 7 years old, Dylan actually enjoys cooking his own scrambled eggs (he’s dubbed them “easy eggs!” 🍳). Eggs are also a good source of several nutrients tied to brain health, including vitamins B6 and B12, folate, and again, choline.
3. Kale Green Smoothie
Yes, kale isn’t necessarily an appealing breakfast option for anyone but add it to a smoothie and I can almost guarantee your kids will drink it up! Kale is incredibly high in brain-development nutrients such as iron, folate, and vitamin B6, yet you’ll be surprised that you literally cannot taste the kale when mixed into a smoothie. Here is an easy breakdown of a green smoothie recipe that is a hit in our family:
- 2 cups fresh kale
- 1 cup frozen tropical fruit (mango and pineapple are our favorites)
- 1/2 frozen banana
- 1 cup coconut milk
- 1 cup coconut water
Just add ingredients to blender and blend!
4. Blueberry Oatmeal
Blueberries are an amazing fruit that’s packed with antioxidants that may improve memory. Enjoy them on their own or mix on top of a bowl of oatmeal for some added sweetness!
5. Cinnamon Pancakes
Cinnamon is like a wonder spice — not only does it make almost everything delicious, but it’s also high in the powerful antioxidant manganese. Manganese is another nutrient that’s crucial for brain and body health and studies have even shown that just smelling cinnamon can boost memory in a task! I’ll add cinnamon to the banana pancakes that I sometimes make for my kids or just sprinkle it on top of some cut-up apples!
